The West Gate Tunnel portal structures demanded a solution that could deliver both long-term durability and a defined architectural finish. Radiata Pine glulam beams were selected for their sustainability and strength, but required protection across multiple stages, from fabrication through to final installation.

Initial coating in New Zealand with CUTEK® Wood Preservative and Pewter Gray Colortone provided early-stage protection and established the desired tone. Following transport to Australia, additional coats of CUTEK® Wood Preservative ensured full saturation and consistent coverage across all surfaces prior to assembly.

This layered approach delivered a stable, weather-resistant timber structure, maintaining both performance and a cohesive aesthetic aligned with the project’s design intent.
